Sound of the Rain

About the Game

Sound of the Rain  is a 2D physics puzzler with a heavy emphasis on music creation. Players solve puzzles to build parts of a song, that thematically follow the arc of a thunderstorm. During early development, it went by the placeholder title of "Project Song."

In each puzzle, the player gets control over a cluster of blocks that they can arrange in the level however they please. Their goal is to get the Droplet (the ball) to hit all of the specially-marked (unmovable) star blocks. Notes are played whenever the Droplet hits a block, and once the puzzle is complete, all of the notes played in the level are dynamically incorporated into the background music, allowing the player to create diverse and interesting musical compositions with their puzzle solutions.

Sound of the Rain was developed by just two people: myself (Lucy Tibbits), and Andrea Ellinger. I managed all matters relating to production, game design, and playtesting, while Andrea was in charge of developing the engine, its level editor, and the entirety of the game's Sound Design.
