From Where She Dreams

Team Project, July 2013 - April 2014 (Student)

About The Game

From Where She Dreams is a 2D Point-and-Click adventure about dreams, dinosaurs, and the power of imagination. You play as Bobbie, an 8 year old girl looking for her lost journal. As she makes her way through the world she, with the help of her best friend/stuffed dinosaur toy Darrin, must use her imagination to change her surroundings and solve the puzzles, regaining scraps of her journal as she goes. With team work and a little imagination, they might just be able to find who stole her journal and get it back.

 My Specific Contributions Included...

  • 2D Level Design

  • Point-and-click Puzzle Design

  • UI Design

  • Placeholder 2D Assets (Though the team liked one or two enough that they stayed in the final game)

Working on this game was a fantastic learning experience for me. I had never worked with a team this size, nor had I worked on any point-and-clicks before (though I've played quite a few). My contribution vested mostly in puzzle development and level design (that essentially go hand-in-hand, for point-and-clicks), often working alongside the design lead Devin Kaas. Designing puzzles for FWSD was a very interesting challenge, because one had to try and think like the players to design solutions that made "sense." At first, predicting how players would view a puzzle was very difficult, and we had to completely overhaul certain puzzles several times before our playtesters finally got them.

One of the things I really enjoyed about working on this project was that the puzzles we made were supposed to come from the mind of an 8-year-old girl. It was a lot of fun trying to think like a kid, using pieces of my own elementary school playground days as inspiration. Kids can be creative in some of the strangest ways, but often times that strangeness does make sense -- if you stretch your imagination a little bit.
